The celebration of the Festivity of St. Blaise in Brussels was organized by the Brussels branch of Matica Hrvatska in cooperation with Dubrovnik-Neretva County and the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in the Kingdom of Belgium.
Following the model of the unique Festivity, the ceremonial opening was held in front of the Cathedral of St. Mihaela and Gudula in Brussels by reading the Festivity proclamation of this year's Festanjulki and releasing doves as a symbol of freedom and peace. After the ceremonial opening, in the chapel of the cathedral, a traditional religious ceremony of the blessing of the throat was held - grilčanje.
The Festivity of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, is celebrated on February 3 from 972 until today and represents UNESCO's intangible world heritage in Croatia.
The celebration of the Festivity of St. Blaise in Brussels has been held since 2013, and in 2016 it was nominated for Večernjak's Hometown as the most significant event of the year for Croats living outside Croatia.
The opening of this year's Festivity in Brussels was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia, His Excellency Mr. Joško Paro, the Prefect of Dubrovnik-Neretva County Mr. Nikola Dobroslavić, the Representative Office of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Brussels, the Representative Office of the Croatian Tourist Board in Brussels and the Representative Office of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem in Brussels.
