The European Commission launched a call for expressions of interest for 100 regional innovation valleys in order to strengthen local and regional innovations.
Regional innovation valleys should improve European innovation ecosystems and better connect innovation actors across Europe, including in lagging regions, solving pressing societal challenges and fostering stronger cohesion.
As a flagship initiative under the New European Innovation Agenda, the Regional Innovation Valleys will focus on addressing the innovation divide by harnessing deep-tech innovation. The aim is to identify 100 regions committed to better coordinating their research and innovation investments and policies and to collaborating on inter-regional innovation projects.
The Partnerships for Regional Innovation aim to connect and strengthen innovation ecosystems across the EU of different levels of performance to benefit from complementary strengths, as well as to direct local and regional efforts towards key challenges facing the EU, such as reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, increasing food security or facilitating the digital transformation.
Innovations, and especially the new wave of deep-tech innovations, are the European answer to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the digitalization of our economies and guaranteeing the security of food, energy and raw materials in Europe. The new European Innovation Agenda should position Europe at the forefront of a new wave of deep-tech innovation and start-ups. It will help Europe develop new technology to solve society's most pressing challenges and bring them to market.
