The European Commission has announced a call for proposals for projects in 2020 under the LIFE program
This year, more than 450m euros have been set aside for nature protection, environmental protection and climate action projects.
The LIFE program is a financial instrument of the European Union intended for financing activities in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection.
The goal of the LIFE program is to contribute to the successful implementation and development of EU policies and legislation in the field of environment, nature and climate.
Through the LIFE program, the European Union seeks to contribute to the protection and improvement of environmental quality and reduce the impact of climate change by funding innovative projects that contribute to the transition to a low-carbon and circular economy, resource efficiency and stopping and reducing biodiversity loss and ecosystem conservation.
What types of projects are funded?
LIFE funds projects under its environmental and climate sub-programs that help implement the European Green Agreement.
Most LIFE projects are projects that can be coordinated by any legal entity registered in the EU. This includes public institutions, businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Many such projects demonstrate best practices that raise public awareness or show progress in the field of environmental protection.
Applications are also accepted for larger so-called integrated projects. These projects lead the EU's strategic plans on the environment and climate, and have a regional, multiregional, national or transnational dimension.
How to apply?
Applying for projects with a focus on climate change includes submitting a comprehensive proposal by October 2020. This includes proposals for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, as well as climate management and information initiatives.
For projects dealing with environmental and nature protection, there is a double application process: candidates first present their idea in the form of a concept by July 2020. If your concept is shortlisted, you will have until February 2021 to submit a complete project proposal . The two-phase process includes nature protection and biodiversity, environmental and resource protection, as well as environmental management and information projects.
Applications for integrated projects also follow a two-stage process.
