Green Deal Going Local

The European Committee of the Regions has set up working group  'Green Deal Going Local' to aim for cities and regions to become part of the European Green Deal  and to ensure that the EU’s sustainable growth strategy such as the COVID-19 recovery plan is truly translated into immediate action close to financing cities and regions and refering to tangible projects for each area.

The 'Green Deal Going Local' working group is composed of thirteen local and regional elected representatives and has three specific objectives:

  • To provide a crosscutting view on the numerous policy areas within the European Green Deal and ensure policy coherence and consistency across files and related opinions.
  • To reinforce the institutional outreach of the European Committee of the Regions on the Green Deal as to place cities and regions at the core of the path towards climate-neutrality.
  • To channel the challenges that local and regional authorities are facing while implementing the green transition locally and communicate their achievements and best practices as to facilitate its replication across the European Union.

The  European Green Deal is a roadmap for transforming the EU economy into a sustainable economy. It includes new strategies for sustainable growth and lower legal measures, measures within sectoral policies and financing mechanisms. It has a threefold goal: that there will be no more greenhouse gas emission by 2050, that economic growth will no longer be used as a resource and that no person and no place will be commanded. The areas covered by the European Green Deal are:

  • Sustainable Energy
  • Circular Economy
  • Clean Transport
  • Nature & Biodiversity
  • Food & Agriculture
  • Green Finance & Industry
