The European Commission today launched a public consultation on a future action plan for organic farming.
This sector will play an important role in implementing the European Green Agenda and achieving the objectives set out in the field-to-table strategy and the biodiversity strategy.
The Commission's priority is to ensure that the organic farming sector has the appropriate instruments at its disposal and an effective and harmonized legal framework, which is key to achieving the target of 25% of agricultural land devoted to organic farming. Although the new regulation on organic production is a solid foundation, the secondary legislation yet to be adopted must provide equally strong support.
Therefore, at the request of Member States, the European Parliament, third countries and other stakeholders, the Commission today proposed to postpone the entry into force of the new legislation on organic production for one year, from 1 January 2021 to 1 January 2022.
