The first plenary session of the European Parliament after the summer break, during which the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will give her first speech on the state of the Union, is being held in Brussels this week.
The central event of the plenary session will be a speech on the state of the Union by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, 16 September. Once a year, at the September plenary session, the President of the European Commission gives a speech on the state of the Union, reviewing the results of the past year and announcing priorities for the next. The first debate on the state of the European Union was held on 7 September 2010 in Strasbourg, with the participation of the then President of the Commission, José Manuel Barroso.
In her first State of the Union address, Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the Commission's efforts to mitigate the health and economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and set out its views on economic recovery, the fight against climate change and the situation in the European Neighborhood.
