Webinar "European rural agenda urgently needed for rural areas after the COVID crisis"

Rural and central areas make up 88% of the EU's territory, are home to 55% of the population, generate 43% of gross value added and provide 56% of their jobs.

Therefore, rural development is an extremely important and vital tool for achieving the goal of territorial cohesion contained in the Lisbon Treaty.

The current pandemic crisis has exposed the state and consequences of a series of long-standing threats facing rural areas and highlighted the urgency of revitalizing rural areas in regions across the European Union. On the other hand, the pandemic has fueled more local patterns of consumption and production, teleworking habits, increased the importance of quality of life and developed new forms of mobility, which can open up new opportunities for sustainable jobs and growth in rural areas.

Following a European Parliament resolution on addressing the specific needs of rural, mountainous and remote areas, the new commission was asked to develop a new long-term vision for rural areas.
