The strategic importance of the agri-food sector to the European Union is best seen through the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which accounts for around 36% of the total EU budget.

The agri-food sector has a strong cultural and social importance taking into account Europe's strong traditions and the contribution of the sector to keeping rural economies alive and keeping rural areas and landscapes across the EU.
