On September 14, MEPs will consider the work of the European Commission to ensure that the EU addresses the key concerns of Europeans. You too can watch the State of the EU Speech live.
Namely, every September the president of the European Commission comes to the European Parliament to discuss with the members of the European Parliament what the Commission has done in the past year, what it intends to do in the coming year and about its vision for the future. This is known as the State of the European Union Address or SOTEU.
After the presentation of the President of the Commission, the members of the European Parliament, as elected representatives of EU citizens, call the Commission to account and monitor its work to make sure that the key problems of Europeans are solved.
The speech on the state of the EU affects the Commission's work program for the coming year.
What is in focus, and currently the most important issues facing the EU today, are the EU's response to the Russian war in Ukraine, climate change, EU measures to address the ever-increasing cost of living, the energy crisis and the rule of law.
The priorities presented by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during last year's debate on the State of the European Union are still relevant, including efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences and digital transformation.
The EU Parliament, in accordance with the proposals of Europeans for changing the EU adopted by the Conference on the Future of Europe, expects the EU to listen to citizens' demands and react with ambitious policies, especially in times of crisis.
The debate will be streamed live on the following website on Wednesday 14 September from 9.00am. Interpretation will be available in all 24 official EU languages - simply select the language of your choice.
You can also watch it live on Facebook and join the discussion on other social media channels, including Twitter , LinkedIn and Instagram .
